Austria sits right in the middle of Europe, which makes it incredibly easy to turn an Austria vacation into something bigger. Vienna pairs beautifully with Prague and Budapest, and depending on your route, Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia and northern Italy can all make sense too.
That doesn’t mean cramming five countries into ten days just because you can. Slow the hell down. But if you’re already flying across the Atlantic, look at what’s around you. Sometimes adding a few nights somewhere else fits naturally into the trip without turning your vacation into a race.
Maybe Austria is the main event. Maybe it’s part of a bigger Central European adventure. Or maybe you’re staying in Vienna and just want to cross a border for the day.

Austria uses the euro (€), and cards are widely accepted in cities, hotels, restaurants and most tourist areas. Still, keep a little cash handy—smaller cafés, markets and businesses may prefer it.

Spend where the experience matters, save where it doesn’t, and remember that some of Austria’s best experiences—walking historic cities, exploring villages and getting outside—cost little or nothing.

Austria is easy to reach from the U.S., with Vienna (VIE) serving as the country's main international gateway. Depending on where you're traveling from, you'll find nonstop options or easy one-stop connections through major European hubs.

Austria is incredibly easy to get around, with excellent trains, reliable public transportation and scenic roads connecting cities, villages and the Alps. How you travel really depends on the trip you’re building.

🚋 Public Transportation: Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck have excellent local transit, so you usually don't need a car in the cities.

🚗 Car: Worth considering if your trip includes Alpine villages, mountain roads, lakes or smaller towns where you want more freedom.

🚲 Bike: Austria is very bike-friendly, and cycling can be a fun way to get around locally—especially along rivers, lakes and in smaller towns.

🌍 CONTINUING THROUGH EUROPE? Rail connections make it easy to continue into Germany, Czechia, Hungary, Slovakia, Switzerland, Slovenia and northern Italy.

You do not have to be a classical music person to do this. You don’t need to know Mozart from Strauss, understand the orchestra or pretend you suddenly have sophisticated taste in violins. 😂
But you’re in Austria—a country where classical music is woven into the history, the cities and the culture. So dress up a little. Have a great dinner. Walk into a beautiful palace, historic concert hall or centuries-old church and hear the music performed in the kind of place it was meant to be heard.
Maybe you’ll absolutely love it. Maybe you’ll appreciate it more than you expected. Maybe once is enough.

A FEW THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
Austrians can be polite, direct and a little more reserved than many Americans are used to. Don't mistake that for being unfriendly. Small talk with strangers isn't always necessary, people generally keep their voices down in public, and yes—a little dry or dark humor may sneak into the conversation. Personally, I can work with that. 😂
You don't need to memorize a rulebook before you go. Just understand the local rhythm, be respectful and remember that you're visiting their country.
👋 SAY HELLO — AND GOODBYE
When you enter a smaller shop, café or restaurant, acknowledge people. A simple Guten Tag (good day/hello) when you arrive and Auf Wiedersehen (goodbye) when you leave goes a long way.
⏰ BE ON TIME
Austrians generally take punctuality seriously. If you've made a reservation, booked a tour or arranged to meet someone, show up when you said you would. If you're running late, let them know.
🤝 START A LITTLE MORE FORMALLY
Don't assume everyone wants instant American-style familiarity. A handshake and polite greeting work perfectly when meeting someone new. Titles and surnames may be used more readily than Americans are accustomed to, so follow the other person's lead.
🔉 READ THE ROOM
Austrians tend to be more reserved in public. You don't need to whisper, but the entire train car doesn't need to hear your conversation either. 😂 Pay attention to the people around you and match the energy.
👗 MAYBE DON'T SHOW UP LIKE YOU JUST MOWED THE LAWN
Austria isn't a place where you need to dress formally all day, but people often look fairly put-together—especially in cities and nicer restaurants. And if you're going to that classical concert we just talked about? For God's sake, have some fun and dress up.
🗣️ DIRECT DOESN'T MEAN RUDE
Conversation can be more straightforward and less padded with small talk than Americans may be accustomed to. Don't automatically interpret a short or direct response as hostility. And if some dry, cynical humor comes your way, you may have just found your people.
