And don't make the mistake of thinking Croatia is only about the sea. Head inland and you'll find waterfalls, national parks, vineyards, historic towns and Zagreb, a capital that deserves more attention than simply being somewhere you fly into.
This is a country that works beautifully for road trips, island hopping, sailing trips or a little bit of all three. Stay somewhere longer because you love it. Take the scenic route. Miss a ferry and have a beer while you wait.

Hot, sunny and perfect for beaches, sailing and island hopping—but also the busiest and most expensive time of year.

Milder temperatures and fewer crowds make these months great for road trips, historic cities and national parks.

Croatia uses the euro (€). Cards are widely accepted, but keep a little cash handy for small cafés, markets and other little purchases along the way.
🍷 TIPPING
Tipping is appreciated but not complicated. Rounding up or leaving around 5–10% for good service is generally a comfortable rule of thumb.
✈️ GETTING THERE FROM THE U.S.
Depending on your departure city and season, you may connect through a major European hub before continuing to Croatia.
And that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
If you're already connecting through London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt or another great European city, you might as well ask whether it's worth staying a few damn days. 🇭🇷✈️🌍

Croatia was made to be seen from the water. Small-ship cruises, private yachts and sailing charters let you move between islands, hidden coves and coastal towns without constantly packing and unpacking.
Want to splurge somewhere? A few days on the Adriatic might be the place to do it.
⛴️ ISLAND HOPPING BY FERRY
Croatia's ferries and catamarans make it easy to travel between the mainland and islands like Hvar, Brač, Korčula, Vis and Mljet.
Schedules get busier in summer, so if island hopping is a major part of your trip, plan those connections before you build everything else around them.
🚗 GET A CAR. TAKE THE SCENIC ROUTE.
A rental car gives you the freedom to explore national parks, smaller towns, vineyards and the Croatian countryside on your own schedule.
Use ferries for the islands. Walk the historic cities. And when the road looks interesting, hit the road. 🇭🇷

Croatia is generally pretty relaxed, so don't overthink it. Be polite, say hello, make eye contact and learn a couple of Croatian words. Even a simple hvala (thank you) goes a long way.

Croatia has a strong Catholic heritage and you'll encounter beautiful churches throughout the country. Dress respectfully when entering religious sites and follow any posted rules.

If you're invited into someone's home, bringing a small gift is a nice gesture. And pay attention when you walk through the door—removing your shoes is customary in many Croatian homes, and your host may offer you slippers.

And if your host offers you coffee, food or rakija—the traditional fruit brandy—don't be in too much of a hurry to say no. Sometimes the best part of traveling is sitting down with somebody who actually lives there. 🇭🇷

Croatia sits in a ridiculously good position for turning one trip into something much bigger. Spend a few days wandering Dubrovnik or Split, hop between the islands, then board a ship and keep going. Italy, Greece, Montenegro and more of the Mediterranean are right there. What started as a week in Croatia can suddenly become two countries, three countries—or one hell of an Adriatic adventure.
And this is a great trip to bring your people. Grab your friends, your family, your favorite travel partners and make something out of it. Cruise it. Sail it. Add a few days in Italy. Finish on a Greek island. Go small and intimate or choose a larger ship with all the bells and whistles. There isn’t one right way to do the Adriatic.
