🇭🇷 ISTRIA
CROATIA WITH A LITTLE ITALIAN ACCENT.
Istria is Croatia—but with its own personality. Tucked into the northwestern corner of the country, this heart-shaped peninsula blends colorful Adriatic towns, Roman history, medieval hilltop villages, vineyards, olive groves and a food culture that can completely hijack your itinerary. Along the coast, places like Rovinj, Pula and Poreč bring Venetian influence, ancient ruins and long evenings beside the sea. Drive inland and everything changes: winding country roads lead to tiny stone villages, wineries, olive farms and forested hills where some of Croatia’s most prized truffles are hiding underground.
And this is a region you should taste, not just see. Spend a morning wandering Rovinj, hunt for truffles with a local guide, taste olive oil where it's produced, settle in for a long lunch, then start working your way through Istrian wine country. This is exactly the kind of place where having a car gives you freedom—but it's also where splurging on a private driver or guide can be worth every damn penny. Nobody has to navigate, nobody has to watch the wine pours, and that little winery or family-run restaurant you never would have found on your own suddenly becomes part of the trip.
Istria isn't a region I'd rush through. Give it a few days, leave some holes in the itinerary and be prepared to change your plans when you find a hill town, winery or plate of truffle pasta that makes you decide you're not going anywhere for a while.
Come for the coast. Stay for the food, wine and little hilltop towns that completely screw up your itinerary—in the best possible way. 🍷

Rovinj is the kind of place that makes you start checking hotel availability for another night before you've even unpacked. The old town rises straight out of the Adriatic in a jumble of pastel buildings, terracotta rooftops and narrow stone lanes, with the bell tower of St. Euphemia watching over everything from the top of the hill.
Spend your time getting completely lost in the Old Town, climbing toward St. Euphemia for the views, wandering the waterfront and stopping whenever a café, wine bar or restaurant looks too good to pass up. Rovinj is especially beautiful toward evening, when the waterfront fills up and the whole town starts glowing over the Adriatic.
But don't treat Rovinj as something you simply photograph and leave. This is one of the best places in Istria to slow the hell down. Have a long seafood lunch. Take a boat out on the water. Order another glass of Malvazija. Watch the sunset. Tomorrow can wait.

🎟️ ICONIC EXPERIENCE — GET ME INSIDE THE GOOD STUFF
POSTOJNA CAVE & PREDJAMA CASTLE — PRIVATE DAY TOUR
WHY I PICKED IT: Explore a spectacular underground cave system, then visit a medieval castle literally built into the side of a cliff. This is one of those “how the hell did they build that?” kind of days.

ROVINJ SUNSET & DOLPHIN CRUISE

🍄 ISTRIAN TAPESTRY — WINE, TRUFFLES & OLIVE OIL
TASTE YOUR WAY THROUGH ISTRIA
WHY I PICKED IT: Truffle hunting, local wine, olive oil, cheese, charcuterie and Motovun—all rolled into one delicious day. If you want to taste what Istria is famous for, this one pretty much says give me everything.
🍄 TRUFFLE HUNTING IN MOTOVUN
HUNT THEM. THEN EAT THEM.
WHY I PICKED IT: Head into the forest with trained truffle dogs, hunt for the good stuff, then sit down to a three-course truffle meal. You don't just taste Istria—you get muddy looking for lunch. 😂

Pula is not the polished little Adriatic beauty that Rovinj is—and that's exactly why I like it. This is a real working city where Roman ruins are casually mixed into everyday life. You can walk through a 2,000-year-old Roman arch, grab a coffee in the ancient Forum and then turn a corner and find one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world sitting right in the middle of town.
The Arena is the showstopper, so absolutely go inside. Walk the arena floor, explore the underground passages once used for gladiators, animals and equipment, and then keep going—the Temple of Augustus, Arch of the Sergii, Roman Forum, Kaštel and the underground Zerostrasse tunnels are all close enough that Pula is ridiculously easy to explore on foot.
Give Pula at least a full day instead of treating the Arena like a roadside photo stop. Wander the Old Town, sit down for lunch, explore the Roman sites and let yourself experience the slightly grittier, lived-in side of Istria. Rovinj makes you want to fall in love. Pula makes you want to know what the hell happened here.

🏛️ HISTORY — SHOW ME THE CITY
DISCOVER PULA WITH A LOCAL HISTORY TEACHER
WHY I PICKED IT: Explore Pula with someone who actually knows how to tell the damn story. This private walk brings the city’s Roman ruins, hidden details and 2,000 years of history to life without feeling like a history lecture.
🍷 FOODIE — LET ME EAT THE CITY
ISTRIAN WINE, PROSCIUTTO & CURED MEATS TASTING
WHY I PICKED IT: Local Istrian wine, prosciutto and cured meats without giving up half your damn day. An easy, delicious introduction to the flavors of Istria.

🏴☠️🔥 EPIC EXPERIENCE — HOLY SHIT, WE’RE DOING THAT.
PIRATE SHIP TO KAMENJAK, PORER LIGHTHOUSE & LEVAN ISLAND
WHY I PICKED IT: Because you're exploring southern Istria on a freaking pirate ship. 😂 Cruise around Cape Kamenjak, swim near the caves, sail past Porer Lighthouse and spend a couple of hours kicking back on Levan Island—with lunch and drinks along the way.

⭐ PRIVATE EXPERIENCE — WORTH THE SPLURGE
PRIVATE KAMENJAK & CEJA ISLAND BOAT DAY
WHY I PICKED IT: Want the Kamenjak experience without sharing the pirate boat with a few hundred new friends? 😂 Take your own private wooden boat instead—swim the caves, cruise past Porer Lighthouse, relax on Ceja Island and have lunch and wine onboard with just your crew.

Stay somewhere beautiful and leave enough room in the itinerary to change your plans when you find somewhere you don’t want to leave.
