Opatija feels a little different from the Croatia you may be picturing. Instead of medieval stone walls and rustic fishing villages, you'll find grand Habsburg-era villas, elegant hotels, seaside gardens and one hell of a waterfront promenade stretching along the blue waters of Kvarner Bay. It became one of the Adriatic's fashionable resort towns in the 19th century, and you can still feel that old European glamour when you're walking along the coast.
The star is the Lungomare, a seaside promenade that winds past historic villas, little swimming coves, cafés and beautiful views across the bay. Take your time here. Stop for coffee, find somewhere for seafood and Croatian wine, wander through Angiolina Park and watch the boats moving across the Adriatic.
But Opatija is also a launching point rather than just a destination. From here, the islands of Krk, Rab, Lošinj and Cres are waiting offshore, making this the perfect place to spend a night or two before heading out onto the water.

KRK — THE ISLAND THAT HAS A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING
Krk is the kind of island where you can wander through a medieval old town in the morning, drink local wine in a hilltop village in the afternoon and be swimming in ridiculously blue Adriatic water before dinner. Connected to the mainland by bridge, it’s easy to reach—but once you’re here, it definitely feels like island life.
Start in Krk Town, where stone streets, ancient walls and a waterfront full of cafés and boats make it easy to settle into vacation mode. Then explore the rest of the island. Head south to Baška for its dramatic mountains and beautiful beaches, stop in Vrbnik for a glass of Žlahtina wine, or get out on the water to find the coves and beaches you’ll never see from the road.
Krk is also made for people who want to do something with their beach vacation. Snorkel, kayak, paddleboard, sail, hike—or disappear onto a boat for the day and see where you end up.

RAB — WHERE MEDIEVAL STREETS MEET SOME OF CROATIA’S BEST SANDY BEACHES
Rab feels like someone took a beautiful medieval Croatian town, dropped it onto an Adriatic island and then surrounded it with beaches. Rab Town is the star, with its unmistakable four bell towers rising above terracotta rooftops, stone streets winding through the Old Town and waterfront cafés that make it very easy to forget whatever you thought you were supposed to be doing that afternoon.
But Rab isn’t just another
pretty Croatian old town. Head north toward the Lopar Peninsula and the landscape changes completely, with sandy beaches, shallow turquoise water and hidden coves tucked around the coastline. Paradise Beach is the famous one, but part of the fun is getting out and finding your own favorite stretch of the island.
Give Rab a couple of nights so you can have both versions of it: wander the medieval streets, have dinner and wine in Rab Town, then spend the next day barefoot, swimming and exploring the coast. It’s history and beach vacation rolled into one ridiculously good-looking little island.
Come for the four bell towers. Stay because you realized tomorrow’s plans involve absolutely nothing more complicated than finding another beach.

ZADAR — ANCIENT STREETS, SEA MUSIC & UNFORGETTABLE SUNSETS
Zadar is one of those cities where 2,000 years of history somehow works perfectly with one of the coolest waterfronts in Croatia. Roman ruins sit in the middle of town, medieval churches rise above polished stone streets, cafés spill into old squares—and then you walk a few minutes toward the Adriatic and the entire vibe changes.
Start in the historic center with the Roman Forum and St. Donatus Church, then forget about following a strict itinerary and wander. Zadar’s Old Town is compact, walkable and made for getting a little lost. Grab something to eat, find a café, explore the side streets and eventually make your way toward the waterfront.
And this is where Zadar gets really good. The Sea Organ actually turns the movement of the Adriatic into music, while nearby Greeting to the Sun comes alive with light as the sun goes down. Get there before sunset, find a spot along the water and stay awhile. This is not the night to rush off to dinner.
Give Zadar 2–3 days if you’re traveling independently. That gives you enough time for the Old Town, Roman history, a long sunset evening and still leaves room for a beach, boat trip or island day.
Come for the history. Stay for the sunset. And yes, the sea really does play music here.
🏛️ HISTORY — SHOW ME THE CITY

WHY I PICKED IT: Zadar has way too much history to just wander past everything wondering what the hell you’re looking at. In two hours, a local guide connects the dots between Roman ruins, medieval churches, old city gates and modern Zadar—including the Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun. Short enough that it doesn't eat your whole day, but long enough that the city actually starts making sense.

WHY I PICKED IT: Now THIS is how I want to spend an afternoon in Croatia. Your own private boat, turquoise swimming coves, snorkeling, unlimited Dalmatian wine—and fresh fish cooked right on the boat with homemade bread baked that morning. No giant tour boat. No fighting for a spot. Just your people, the Adriatic, good food and wine. And because the price is for the whole group, get a few friends or family members together and this becomes a pretty damn good deal.

WHY I PICKED IT: This is the splurge for the group that wants to get out of Zadar and make a whole damn day of it. You’ve got Krka’s waterfalls, a river cruise and Croatian wine and cheese—and instead of spending the day following a giant tour group around, you’ve got the experience to yourselves. Get a few friends or family members together, split the cost and suddenly a private day in Croatian wine country with waterfalls thrown in doesn’t sound extravagant at all.
MALI LOŠINJ — BREATHE DEEP. SLOW DOWN. YOU’RE ON ISLAND TIME.
Mali Lošinj feels like Croatia telling you to slow the hell down for a minute. Colorful houses wrap around the harbor, fishing boats bob along the waterfront, and everywhere you look there are pine-covered hills dropping into ridiculously clear blue water. The island is famous for its fresh sea air, aromatic herbs and lush Mediterranean landscape—and you really do feel the difference the minute you arrive.
Start around Mali Lošinj Harbor, where cafés and restaurants line the waterfront and the whole town seems built for wandering without much of a plan. Then head toward Čikat Bay, where pine trees grow practically to the edge of the Adriatic and little coves make it very easy to lose an afternoon swimming, kayaking or doing absolutely nothing.
Make time for nearby Veli Lošinj, a smaller, colorful harbor village that feels even more relaxed. And if you want something beyond beaches and boats, visit the Museum of Apoxyomenos, home to an ancient Greek bronze statue discovered beneath the Adriatic, or wander through the Lošinj Aromatic Garden and see just how much of this island grows wild and smells incredible.
Give Mali Lošinj 2–3 days if you’re traveling independently. But it’s also exactly the kind of island that makes a Croatia cruise work so well—you arrive by sea, get a taste of island life, swim somewhere beautiful, have dinner by the harbor and wake up ready to see what’s waiting on the next island.
Breathe deep. Have another glass of wine. Whatever you were rushing to can wait.

CRES — WILD COAST. ANCIENT STONE. ISLAND SOUL.
Cres feels wilder than the Croatian islands we’ve visited so far. The coastline is rugged, ancient olive trees twist across the landscape, tiny stone villages cling to hillsides and some of the island’s most beautiful beaches are tucked beneath cliffs where getting there is half the adventure. This isn't polished resort Croatia—and that's exactly why I like it.
Start in Cres Old Town, where Venetian-style buildings, narrow stone streets and little squares surround the harbor. Then head inland and up to Lubenice, an ancient stone village perched high above the Adriatic. The views alone are worth the trip, but far below you'll see Sveti Ivan Beach, a gorgeous secluded beach reached by boat or by a steep hike down from the village.
And then there are the griffon vultures. Cres is one of the rare places where these enormous birds nest on cliffs directly above the sea. Seeing one soaring over the island with the Adriatic below is the kind of thing you remember long after you've forgotten which church you saw on which day.
Give Cres 2–3 days if you're exploring independently—and yes, you can bring your car over on the ferry, which makes this a fantastic island to road-trip. Wander Cres Old Town, drive through ancient olive groves and tiny stone villages, find a beach that requires a little effort to reach, and leave enough time to pull over whenever the road suddenly gives you one of those ridiculous Adriatic views.
Cres isn't the island you come to because there's a checklist of things to do. You come because it's still a little wild. And sometimes that's exactly the point.
🌿 EXPERIENCES — CRES IS BETTER A LITTLE WILD
Cres isn't packed with big organized tours—and that's part of the appeal. Go looking for griffon vultures, get out on the water, explore hidden beaches, wander through ancient olive groves or spend the day discovering tiny stone villages most people blow right past.
